Colorado Springs is going through the early stages of brainstorming and planning for campaign finance reforms to eliminate the corrupting influence of big money in local politics. Fort Collins has been a model for achieving meaninful change through campaign finance reform at the local level. In recent years, they have taken significant steps in getting big money out of politics by lowering contribution limits to candidate campaigns and requiring disclosure of dark money. Now the residents of Fort Collins are drafting a proposl for Publicly Financed Elections, drawing on the Boulder model that has been in place and running successfully for decades.
Two years ago, Denver passed The Fair Elections Act with 71% of the vote. Now Mayor Hancock and City Council are considering cutting funds in its first year, disrupting the new publicly financed campaign system and threatening its existence.
